It’s a strange thing not to be drawing so many planes, strangely freeing. Four issues under my belt and 80% of the art in those combined books had been some sort of war bird firing at some other war bird. Let me tell you, drawing so many planes gets difficult in the end. It’s not hard to draw them, it’s actually easier. What I mean is it’s hard to get motivated to draw another panel with another B-17 dropping another bomb or shooting another ME 109. That being said, I still loved drawing those planes, but those planes have crashed, and I’m excited at the future of the story.
Take this panel for instance. Red, Cohen and Glossen aren’t inside a B-17, they aren’t in full gear with all the straps and buckles that the gear entails. They are on the ground. On the ground in unfamiliar territory. Three quarters of this fourth numbered issue is on the ground. On the ground in a forest. I’ll admit, I’ve not drawn a lot of trees in my lift, but I’m sure as heck going to by the time this issue is done. At the end of it, I’ll no doubt have learned a lot about drawing trees. Only 10 pages in and I already have. Then again, who knows, maybe a year from now I’ll be complaining about having to draw so many trees.
Andy and Eric are slamming a brand new book- “We Ourselves” by Scott McCauliffe.
Check out page one’s art by Eric inked by Andy.
A quick update from the front lines. These pencils were finished up yesterday afternoon. Lt. Washburne has (not so smoothly) landed in the forest after bailing out of the plane. I’ll post more updates as we have them. I should have a non-spoilery panel to post every couple of days. Those of you who have read issue #0 might recognize what’s going on here. I’m looking forward to seeing Andy’s inks on this panel. Great things are happening if Flying Fortress land.
Working on comic books is a fun and challenging experience. I’ve been penciling B-17s (or variations of the B-17) for over a year. I’ve been drawing fairly accurate depictions of what these, and other planes were line back in the ’40s. I’ve been drawing pilots, men in uniform, military vehicles and buildings. It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s been very challenging. I know, that over these couple of years I’ve improved by leaps and bounds. Don’t believe me? Just look at issue #0 vs some of the art in this post, which is all from issue #4. Though I know there’s many more leaps and many more bounds, I’m happy with how I’m drawing this book right now. So, I want to be able to show that art off to you now!
